Welcome to the website of Sonja Parker and SP Consultancy
My name is Sonja Parker and I am an independent social worker, teacher and child protection consultant from Perth, Western Australia.
Through my business, SP Consultancy, I provide consultation and training to child protection organizations and practitioners around the world to support them in building their knowledge and skills in family and safety-centred child protection practice approaches, including the "Partnering for Safety" approach, family and safety-centred practice, family reunification and comprehensive safety planning. I also work directly with families as an independent practitioner, providing child protection services and rigorous safety planning in high-risk cases and in situations of ‘denied’ child abuse.
I am passionate about supporting child protection workers, supervisors and managers in the difficult work that we do, and about ensuring that family members, including children and young people, have a strong voice in planning for their future. Through my work with families and my training and consultation with agencies and practitioners, I have developed a number of tools, processes and resources to assist child protection professionals and family members in working together more effectively to build future safety for children. These resources are described in more detail under the 'bookshop' section of this website.
I wish you all the best in your work with families!
Three Houses App
I'm very excited to announce the release of our Three Houses App for iPad and tablet. About 2 years ago, Catherine Santoro and I had the idea to create a series of child protection apps and after discussions with Nicki Weld, we began with the Three Houses app. Cath and I have worked with developers in India for the past 18 months to create the app and it has been a very steep learning curve (and a very slow process :) ). The app is now available free on iTunes and Google Play and we hope that it helps make a difference in the work you are doing with children and families.
The flyer for the Three Houses app (as seen below), which contains an introduction by Nicki Weld, can be downloaded here. Please feel free to spread it far and wide!
The "Safe Contact" tool is a tool that I have recently developed to help professionals work collaboratively with parents, children and safety network members to plan for safe contact visits (visitation). The "Safe Contact" tool focuses on collaborative planning for safe contact as a building block for long term safety. Read more.
And the video below provides a brief overview of the "Safe Contact" tool.
Family Roadmap Process
I've recently created the "Family Roadmap" process, which is a family-centred and participatory process that is designed to help elicit the views of family members and their safety network in preparation for detailed, collaborative safety planning. Have a read about it in my blog and a detailed booklet is available from my bookshop.
